An assortment of ways to keep the risk of heart disease, but the diet has always been one of the most important ways. More recently, a study found that a diet low in carbohydrates and high in vegetables or vegan can reduce the risk of heart disease by 10 percent in 10 years.
The study, published in the journal BMJ Open involving 39 men and women who are overweight. They were monitored from April 2005 until November 2006.
Most of the participants followed a low-carbohydrate diet and a vegan known as the Eco-Atkins diet. While others obeying a diet high in carbohydrate and low fat. Both groups did the diet within a period of six months.
Eco-Atkins diet participants choose their meals according to what has been recommended. On average they consume 26 percent of the total carbohydrate calories they eat. The remaining 31 percent comes from protein, and 43 percent from fats which are mostly vegetable oil.
Overall, participants of the Eco-Atkins diet experienced a 10 percent reduction in cholesterol levels and their weight on average 1.8 kilograms lower than participants who ate a high-carbohydrate, low-fat.
Based on these findings, the researcher David Jenkins of St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, Canada, mengalkulasikan, Eco-Atkins diet could reduce the risk of heart disease 10 percent within 10 years.
We conclude, weight loss diet by eating fewer carbohydrates are replaced with vegetables, nuts, and vegetable oils can improve the levels of bad cholesterol and body weight. Both are risk factors of heart disease, he said.
However, further research is needed to determine the effects of low-carbohydrate diets and vegan present only in heart disease risk factors alone, or really to heart disease itself.
